Wang Shipeng (November 9, 1112 – August 6, 1171), styled Guizhi and alias Meisheng, was born in Meixi Village, Zuoyuan, Sidu, Yueqing, Wenzhou (now Yueqing City, Zhejiang Province). He was a renowned politician, poet, and patriotic minister of the Southern Song Dynasty. In the 27th year of the Shaoxing Reign (1157), he was personally selected as the Number One Scholar (Zhuangyuan) by Emperor Gaozong of Song for his proposal on "rejuvenation through restraining autocratic power." He served as a Secretary in the Imperial Academy, repeatedly advocating for rectifying the court and appointing generals who resisted the Jin Dynasty. After Emperor Xiaozong ascended the throne, he was promoted to Censor-in-Chief, strongly proposing strategies for recovering lost lands from the Jin. Serving as governor of Rao, Chu, Hu, and Quan prefectures, he relieved disasters and eliminated evils, achieving remarkable governance, for which people painted his portrait and built temples in his honor.
On June 29, 2019, the Danxi Ecological Tourism Festival and the First Meixi Zhuangyuan Feast Tasting Conference were held in Meixi Village, Sidu, Danxi Town—the hometown of Wang Shipeng, the Zhuangyuan scholar and grand secretary of the Southern Song Dynasty. The event began with the "Zhuangyuan Parade": a procession marched through the streets with gongs and drums resounding, where the "Zhuangyuan"—wearing a Zhuangyuan hat and robe—rode a tall horse. Performers sang and acted while marching, creating a lively atmosphere. This folk parade integrated the thousand-year-old intangible cultural heritage activities of Danxi, such as "Beating the Big Drum and Chasing the Big Beast," reenacting the glory of Zhuangyuan Wang Shipeng's triumphant return home a thousand years ago.
The Zhuangyuan Feast featured exquisitely named dishes like "Fish Leaping over the Dragon Gate," "Taking the Top Spot," "Success in the Imperial Examination," and "Returning Home in Splendor"—each dish not only delicious but also symbolically auspicious. The feast, imbued with the "flavor of Zhuangyuan," delighted both the eyes and the palate at the grand tasting conference.
